This has been my experience. I think since the unlock involves putting your hand inside the door handle as yiu would to open the door, tdore is a larger area of induction. This does lend to the idea that the fob may need a fresh battery.

I replace the fob battery last night. I'll post an update once I use it.
(Given how difficult it was to pry the fob open, i suspect it had its original battery)

Well, changing the battery in the fob had no effect. Same issue.

 

I agree this description is pretty clear. Unusual for the guide. Just about everything i look up says bring it to the dealer.
