i have a 2019 Discovery5 with a leaking rear (locking) differential. it is leaking from the seal on the front of the unit where the prop shaft (drive shaft) connects to the differential. local dealer telling me there is no seal available for this unit so the entire unit must be replaced at cost of $3800 plus $1900 for labour. anyone have this problem or know of a better solution?

Now you just have to hope they do the job right and set the pinion bearing pre-load correctly. You'll still have a decent labor bill since the rear exhaust and driveshaft have to come out, but a $20 part is definitely cheaper than a $3800 part.

yes you are so right Chucktastic- i have tried 4 different LR dealers in my area none of which give me any confidence. the only saving grace is their warranty on repairs is 12 months unlimited kilometres. The quote for replacing the seal is $1,900 CAD ($1,400 USD). I do the majority of maintenance myself however i need to find a competent independent repair shop to do the work i cannot do on my own.
follow up on the repair. total cost for replacing rear pinion seal was $2140 C$ ($1552 USD). Labour was $1870 plus parts $270 - seal, diff fluid, and exhaust clamp.
