I just took delivery of my 2022 Discovery. I purchased the car and plan to hold it for the Long Term. I don't believe that oil changes should be over a significant interval to save a few dollars. Or the alleged 'lifetime fluid' designation is unbelievable, akin to a marketing ploy to show that LR aren't that expensive to maintain.
What do you suggest for these 4-cylinder turbo engines? Every 5k miles?
Also for the long term, what other services should be conducted on a shorter interval?
I always follow the below scheduled and it has worked terrific for me,
Oil change - 5k interval
Transmission and Differential Fluid change ever 40k, 25k if you tow a lot.
Brake Fluid very 2 years
Coolant every 4 years or 50k
i always operate under the fluids and filters are cheap belief.
You'll get lots of views on oil. My honest take is that 5k is a bit wasteful for oil changes. Sure it's not a lot of money just in case. But that's a lot of wasted oil. Modern oils perform much better for longer
Might do the first change early. After that 10-12k or annual seems fine to me
If in doubt, pull an oil sample after 5k miles and have it tested
But - as you say it's low cost and good peace of mind. Better too short than too long
Do what makes you feel better. 5K oil changes with modern synthetics is a waste of money and resources. Once a year is fine unless you're doing high mileages. Most people ignore brake fluid and coolant; 2 and 4 years are wise respectively.
I used to be a 2K oil change guy before synthetic came along. I then became a 5K oil change guy with full synthetic. But with the computer and manufacturer telling me to go 15K, I've been comfortable with doing it at 7.5K now.
As for transmission, transfer case, and differentials, I am comfortable with 60K.
I do brake fluid every 2 years, Coolant every 3 years.
Thanks for all the responses everyone! I am a long term BMW owner and usually follow the 5k mile or annual oil change (whichever comes first) model, annual brake fluid change, and coolant change every 2 years. differential fluid change every 50k miles. transmission fluid change around 70k miles. I use Blackstone Labs for oil change analysis, especially since the BMW is tuned and autocrossed.
With everyone's feedback, may be easiest to follow the same schedule. thanks again for all the feedback.
