New 23 Model
Reading this thread I figured that with our 2017 D5 turning 5 years next June (51k miles currently), it was worth at least looking at what replacing it would take, so spent some time in the configurator last night. Couple observations from the exercise:
- Low gear is now an option??? I mean, it makes sense considering 90% of these won’t even see a dirt road, but still a bit shocked by that.
- Love the idea of a black roof, but not loving the fact that there is no actual black package anymore, so getting actual black wheels is a costly proposition. Having said that I like the satin gray wheels enough to go that route.
- MSRP for a 2023 similarly configured to our 2017 is about 9% higher than our 2017 MSRP which doesn’t seem unreasonable for a five year period.
- New generation six cylinder (Ingenium P360) has a few more hp and higher torque, but is it reliable? The previous 6 cylinder (AJ 126) has been around for a while and with proper maintenance has proven to be fairly capable and reliable. I am not a huge fan of new MHEV technology as I feel the increased complexity impacts reliability, but do not know much about the P360.
- Overall the car has changed so little and considering how happy we are with the 2017 I even wonder if it’s worthwhile to replace it with the 2023. My only concern is there are rumors that the next generation of the Disco will be much more of an urban vehicle, which would drive us away from it, so getting in while it’s there and keep it for a long time would be motivation for the replacement.
- On paper all the technology sounds great, but the key question is whether it will be available given the chip shortage. A few stories of people picking up their ordered new Defenders finding out certain things in their original build were not there when the car arrived.
Will continue toying with the idea and looking for commentary in this forum from people that have gotten 2021 MYs (and now 2022s) as to how the new engines perform.

So got my build out today back from the dealer.
Mostly everything seemed to be there, 3d surround camera, doesn't list the infotainment screen size, only as "PIVI - Diamond".
Adaptive Cruise Control is there.
Homelink Garage opener is there.
Glaring part was the drivers interactive display seems to be changed to analog. "038IC Analogue Dials with Central TFT Display". Can anyone clarify if their build has this, and what showed up? I'd be ticked if it came with Analog displays like a 2004 Discovery 2.
Also does anyone have the massaging seats? Are they worth it? Do they work while driving?

Good to know, youtube video I was watching must have been misinformed.

Rumour has it the Disco 5 is getting a full refresh in 2024. Not sure if it will apply to the Discovery but it could have an electric engine option by then. Which with Biden in office, might be needed lol. Tax credit/ gas saving might make upgrading from a 23' to a 24' a minimal cost.

Have heard those rumors, but as mentioned there is talk that the next generation of Discovery would be much more urban oriented and less capable offroad (the fact that the 23 has low range as an option, seems to support that thinking). If that is the case then I would probably not be interested.

Regarding the engine, I can't speak for reliability but did have the opportunity to drive the Si6 and P360 back to back before I decided to go down the new order path. The P360 drives better in my opinion as the MHEV really helps cover the turbo lag in the low band with the electric supercharger. The power band feels way more linear than the Si6 but like you said, it does make the whole thing way more complicated esp. if anything were to break. I just tell myself that at least the RRS had the engine for a little while and haven't heard of anything catastrophic. Also the technology itself isn't really new to the industry per se, Benz has been doing this for a few years already in their inline-6s. Though how well JLR executes is up for debate

Wasn't low range gearbox always an option on D5. I don't think it's standard on my 2018 HSE even. And I've never needed it
gesture tailgate has never worked well on mine. I give up waving my feet around and just press the button...
I'd be surprised if they make a major change in 2024 model year. It's still pretty 'new'. I expect they will hold off for bigger electric shifts.
