Default Prices paid for 2017 / 2018 Discovery

Hello, I am new to Land Rovers in general, this is my first post.

Wife got interested in a 2017/2018 Discovery, I am thinking the diesel engine over the supercharged from a reliability standpoint, does that make sense?

I have no idea what kind of % discount can I get off of MSRP, can you please let me know what you paid and if you had a trade?

For reference, we are cross shopping a GMC Yukon XL and on a 2017 unit that stickers at $67K I can get a $10K discount plus TTL and 0% interest for 72 months, so I got a pretty good pulse on that market.

On the Land Rovers, no idea, help!

We are in Metro Detroit.

Thanks.

I doubt there is any meaningful reliability difference btw the V6 SC engine and the diesel one. The SC has about 100hp more and is a little faster accelerating (not as much more as you might think). The diesel has more torque, but less power
So I’d choose based on what you’re looking for. Luxury suv then I’d go SC. Heavy duty towing I’d take the torque of the diesel

Fuel economy is not great either way

LR has a year end sales event until early jan so definitely talk to a dealer and take along the offer you have on your other choice. Good for negotiations.

Thanks, I was surprised the local dealer only offered $1000 off MSRP on a 2017, I laughed to myself. They did not mention any end of year special pricing, unless that starts next month...
Also, same dealer says that if I order a 2018, the price will be MSRP, I find this to be ridiculous, or indeed do LR owners pay close to MSRP? I have no idea as I said, but I'll be damned if I pay sticker, never had, never will!

Just purchased a ‘17. They too started with $1000-1500 off, but I ended getting ~5% off the total (including fees, etc.) with some added extras.

i think the year end deals are lease only, but I could be wrong.

I forgot to mention, that my local dealer admitted that another in state dealer had more room to move based on their volume. I’m not sure how many dealers are available in Detroit, but could be worth shopping around.

Thanks, there is only three in the metro Detroit area, two of them came back with measly $1000-$1,200 discounts, I have yet to talk to the third one...

Yes. Most people do pay pretty close to msrp. Possible to get some discount / you’re most likely on a 2017 that they want to shift
Worth shopping around - we bought our LR4 out of state as pricing was better.

Just a couple of comments from me, as I have purchased my share of Land Rovers over the years, but also purchased many new domestic vehicles. The big 3 domestic manufacturers have historically always had pricing artificially high, allowing significant room for discounts, as you are seeing with the Yukon XL. Land Rover has typically not followed this approach, and frankly, hasn't needed to as demand often exceeds supply. Land Rover also penalizes dealerships that knowingly sell a vehicle to someone that will immediately flip the vehicle out of their defined territory. This last statement doesn't apply to you, but reputable dealerships take this pretty seriously. If they are caught, it impacts future allocations.

Looking at local inventory, 8 2017's are in stock, but only two offer significant discounts, and those two are the diesel models. No idea why, as I haven't driven one, but only diesels are offered at a much lower price vs MSRP.

Lastly, comparing a Discovery 5 with a Yukon/Tahoe/Escalade is apples to oranges. Now if you were comparing to a Lexus LX, or a MB GL that would make sense, but the Yukon belongs in comparison to the Expedition/Navigator in my opinion.

I will tell you that a good friend has a 2017 Escalade and is looking to get rid of asap, and likely buy a Discovery 5 very soon. His only complaint is the perceived discount, much like you described. I made the argument that if I priced a new Rover at 200K, but discounted it to 80K, would that make you feel like you got a great deal? Sort of like shopping at Kohl's, only a moron would pay retail for clothes, as the discount is often 50%.

Thanks all what said makes sense, just wanted some affirmation from LR owners and wanted to make sure the dealer was not trying to screw me.

One other comment from me: I love my local dealership and frankly have been spoiled by them. I have known the original owner, as well as the current owners for more than 18 years. They have the following dealerships: Land Rover, Jaguar, Infiniti, and Cadillac. Since 1999, I have purchased/leased 15 vehicles from them. In 2003 I paid a visit to a Land Rover location in Denver, and the attitude and arrogance of the dealership confirmed I would never buy from them, regardless of price. Since then, they are blacklisted for me, and I only buy from my local dealer, period.
