Resale Value
It does work to the advantage of those of us looking to upgrade in the hopefully not too far away future.
We've been watching the prices on LR4's and Disco 5's, and the interesting trend is that later model LR4's are increasing in value, and the early Disco 5's are falling. I'm seeing 5's at under $17K asking price and 4's as high as $38K. Nobody is going to pay that much, but "fair deals" are in the $24K range. LR3' s have been bottoming out price wise.
I do know that buying a new vehicle that craters on value that quickly is disheartening, especially when we bought ourselves a 2019 Disco Sport that was delivered on the showroom floor and was hard to distinguish from the 2024 offering, but less than half the price.

I genuinely believe the D5 is a great vehicle that will be appreciated eventually. I recall when the LR3's and 4's came out and they were hated on and that's all changed.
The exterior design of the D5 is/was ahead of it's time and will age nicely. It's incredibly capable and comfortable and buildable. The Td6 simply isn't worth the aggravation with all of the emissions stuff.

I'd take a D5 over a Defender any day. I'd rather have the more luxurious interior and rear hatch over the "more capable" and rugged Defender since they cost pretty much the same when optioned the same. I'm not taking a 75k suv on any serious off road trails so the D5 is plenty capable. Id rather have the power tailgate and a bit classier design language.
My 2017 HSE Luxury Si6 was $75k new. Bought it new in 2017, had it for five years, and 39k miles and sold it in 2022 to Carmax for $40k and bought a Porsche Macan S. I recently found a high-spec 2017 HSE not too far from me with 45k miles for $21k. Clean Carfax and everything. Glad I sold mine when I did.
I think about the only thing that depreciateS more is an RV.
If resale value is important to you, don't buy a luxury vehicle.
When i buy one, I buy it with the attitude of I'm paying for my use and entertainment. Whatever i get back at the end is found money.
I got my 3 year old low mileage Disco for $40k off its new price. Far as I'm concerned, when I get rid of it, anything I can sell it for is gravy.

I bought my 2018 HSE Lux si6 with 55k miles in Feb 2023 for $38k.
My first Land Rover and I really love it because of the ride, power, and Range Rover like style interior rather than the Defender. I have 85k on the clock now, 30k in 2 years.
That said, today's trade in value of $17k is a $20k drop in just 2 years and 30k miles. Granted, we all overpayed about $7k in 2022-2023 and today's interest rates don't do anyone any favors.
But I expect $17k to damn near rock bottom, or possibly $13k for one with 150k miles.
So I'm in it for the long haul now, because I need to dollar coat average my loss over time and mileage.
This is all fine as the Disco still looks modern and the interior on the HSE Lux is a very nice place to be.
So I will wait 2 more years before grabbing a 2021 L405 Autobiography LWB and start losing money all over again!

The general rule is you buy luxury cars that are three years old coming off low mileage leases. In a normal market they are 40% off and still have a year or two warranty left depending on if they are CPO or not. You take a huge hit once that warranty expires or if a new mode comes out shortly after buying.
A dealer told me to kick rocks because I offered them 1500 less than asking price on 22’ Discovery but if it doesn’t sell in a month or two it will have lost that much more value due to loss of warranty time remaining.

They are to be enjoyed, not treated like an investment. Like ordering a steak at a fine steakhouse, one should not be concerned with what it's worth the next day. That's what Applebee's is for.
