Default Td6 particulate filter questions

What sensors are attached to this filter? Why can't you hollow it out if it's problematic?

there is some uk companies that offer a delete kit. Much more involved than just hollowing it out. They really aren’t to problematic though unless you do all city driving. If you go on the hwy once or twice a month for over 30 miles you should be fine. Or tow with it.

I find that towing something heavy just messes up the DPF more, rather than cleaning it out :-( We’re out of regular warranty but just had our DPF replaced for free after a shutdown (“reduced performance mode”):
VERIFIED CUSTOMER CONCERN.
CONNECTED DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER.
FOUND CODE P2463-00 FOR EXCESSIVE SOOT ACCUMULATION.
RECOMMENDED REPLACING THE DPF FILTER.
REPLACED DPF FILTER AND GASKET.
RESET PARTICULATE MASS MONITOR.
RESET PCM ADAPTIONS.
TEST DROVE CAR.
NO MORE RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE DISPLAYED.
No recall on this yet but I bet JLR Legal Dept are tracking this (just as MBenz Legal have been for several years with our GL350 Bluetec).

Anecdotally, I do find consumption of DEF goes up substantially while towing so something in the system is having to work harder with a load attached.

[still looking for an exit from TD6 to a more substantial tow vehicle for our Airstream - ideally a diesel Yukon (practically unobtainable) or more likely a GM pickup with a honking Duramax V8]

This.... What AS are you towing? The tongue weight on the 25's is horrendous, don't think we can fit in a 23, so wer'e trying to work out what combination of LI battery & composite tanks would make a 27' work vs hopping into a Tahoe / Yukon diesel.

Unfortunate about some vehicles filters "clogging". I do a moderate amount of towing and city/highway mix. We haven't had any after treatment issues with our TD6, were at 80k miles now.

I work as an engineer for a major heavy truck OEM in the States. I can objectively say idling and short trips a terrible for modern after treatment systems. This is going to be the case with any brand or model vehicle. There are differences and sensitivities with regards to calibrations that make some OEM's more sensitive and more prone to setting faults prematurely. I can't say objectively this is the case with LR

I have also have had restricted performance displayed a handful of times. Never in conjunction with DPF warning. A key cycle has cleared the restricted performance state every time.

Increased DEF consumption while towing makes absolute sense. If the vehicle is getting half fuel economy during towing vs not you should expect x2 amount of NOX produced roughly, hence higher DEF consumption.

more fuel=more DEF

I've already had to have my DPF replaced, luckily under warranty. After driving for about 4 years, with a fair amount of mixed hwy/city driving. My commute is about 25 miles to and 25 miles from work. We'll see if it's something that I'll need to have replaced on the regular because the driving for an extended period of time on the highway never got rid of the issue before.

I factored that in already - it’s definitely non-linear with fuel consumption.

To each their own but we have never had an issue with ours. We tow a LOT and do lots of road trips though so the perfect lifestyle for the TD6.
