Default Thule roof rack questions

I have a roof rack from my F250 I kept for the Discovery. Problem is the crossbars are 60 inches wide and I am wondering if anybody has seen or is using these? I need the width to carry two kayaks unless somebody knows a good way on narrower bars. I don't want the factory type crossbars they are very narrow and I also want the ability to put a basket on top too like the Thule Canyon XT. Was looking at the Rhino platforms also but kind of like the idea of a more open basket type than platforms with huge cross bars like Slim Line, etc. Any experience or advice is most appreciated.

I have the RhinoRack aero bars. Great product - better than the Thule and Yakima I have had in the past.

Sea or fishing kayaks?

If sea, you can easily carry two using j-cradles on narrower bars
If fishing or hybrid, you will lay flat and that will take up a little more room. You just need a bar where the kayaks touch the bars.

My preferred way is on a Yakima trailer.

Two fishing kayaks and I don't think 60 inch bars are quite wide enough to lay them flat, I wish. I am have been laying one flat and putting the other on a j-cradle. I looked at Rhino but I already have the Thule bars. I am going to cut those down to 54". I think 60 will look goofy on the Disco V.

What makes Rhino better? I have always had Yakima and Thule but was looking at Rhino.

Rhino just seem more solid. They are a better value in my opinion.

Yes going past 54" will look a little out there.

The fishing kayaks are generally 30 or so inches wide but at the hull where it rests on the bars is less. Put both flat on the ground on the bars to test. There will be overhang but if they are resting solid on the bars your straps will do the rest. I do not put the fishing kayaks in j-cradles because on a hot day they will indents on the sides.

Why not just angle them? I see Subaru’s coming by like that.

That is what the j-cradles do - angle them. However, it still puts a lot of the boat's weight on small points on the side of the boat. In heat, the plastic becomes soft and can permanently dent the boat.
