Default 1999 Disco I

Hey everyone I just acquired this 1999 Disco I from my uncle. 145,000 miles. I'm loving it so far but based on some of the posts I've been reading it is a good thing I'm mechanically inclined! So far I've changed the diff fluid, tranny fluid, transfer case fluid, serpentine belt, battery, and brakes. I've got a list of other things I need to check out:
- Needs new tires, sidewalls are cracking
- Needs new shocks, I'm getting tossed around like a rag doll on these lovely Indiana streets
- ABS light is on but I'm not too worried about this
- Sometimes there is a click when I use the brakes, thinking maybe master cylinder since they are intermittently squishy as well
- Erratic idle, there is some seeping around the plenum gasket so I think this may be the issue
- The transmission clunks when going into reverse, but only when the car is warmed up. When it is cold it goes into reverse smoothly.
- Cruise control doesn't work but again I'm not too worried about this issue.
- Small power steering leak and small oil leak

The list goes on and on. I'll most likely be posting on the forums if I get stuck on any of the previous posts or can't find what I'm looking for after searching. I'm open to any suggestions on what I should do first or if I'm missing any maintenance to start off with. Here are some pics:

Welcome!. RAVE shop manual will be a help, as well as our tech area write ups. That clunk may be a U joint that needs replacing. Cruise control can be lots of things, but a simple one is rotten vac lines that go from firewall to cruise pump (it does not use engine vacuum).

The 60K high miles service list in the tech area is a good start. And https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...estions-46975/.

Hello there. That is one clean looking Disco. Any rust that you have found? Welcome, I am new myself and the website has been helpful especially the RAVE manual.

There is some rust showing when the back doors are open, where the wheels kick up water/snow into the wheel well. Also the supports for the side steps are pretty rusted, I think since these were an option they might not have had the same factory coating as the rest of the chassis. It looks like it is just 1x1 square tubing so I'll probably break out the chop saw and welder and go to town after I take care of some of the other issues.

Other than that there is small surface rust here and there but nothing major.

I've been searching through the RAVE manual and tech articles looking at what I've gotten myself into. Trying to knock out some of the simpler stuff while I'm in my apartment, once I move into the new house this August I'll take on the larger tasks. Management doesn't like oil stains and parts laying out in their parking garage LOL

Ground tarp, fold it up and store in big plastic storage bin. You won't like oil stains at the new house either. If Rover will fit in garage....

When I say new I mean new to me, the house was built in 1920 and has a detached single car garage. Now that I think about it the Rover might not fit in there but at least I'll be able to pull the front wheels in to do oil changes and engine bay work. Should be somewhat helpful when I need to do work during Indiana winters lol.

A quick question on tires, the current tires are Michelins with 40,000 miles on them, a 60,000 mile tread warranty, and were installed in 2008. The tread is still fine (about 10/32 left) but the sidewalls have started cracking. I've never been good at judging when cracking is bad enough to warrant replacing, how do these look? I'm going to be driving to school in August which is about a 1000 mile drive so I'm trying to get most of the maintenance taken care of by then.

You are getting away from new member intro - try posting in a regular part of the forum and you'll get more eyeballz on it.
