Hi... back to my first love....
Greetings to my fellow forum members,
A quick intro about me and my recent purchase of a 2003 Disco SE with 79K, Alveston Red.
I grew up in Singapore and am a naturalised US citizen (lived in the States since 1988). I served 2 years of National Service (similar to the Israeli draft system) in Singapore when I was 18. I was trained as an automotive mechanic. My specialty was to maintain and repair the old Land Rovers which we inherited from the British (Singapore became independent from British rule in 1965). I fondly recollect removing broken axle shafts. Lying on my back as I inspect prop shafts with dried up clay falling on my face. Squatting down to make a paper gasket cutout with oil and a spanner (aka "wrench" in the States) for lots of hubs. Tune-ups galore. Fixing steering wheel freeplay and changing steering gears. Beating on the body panels to fix all sorts of dents and damage when the babies return from military exercises. The good ole memories....
It has been 30 years since I touched another Land Rover. The Disco 2 is certainly a huge diversion from the old LRs. During the 30 years, my automotive hobby has blessed me with previously ownerships in a VW Type 3 Fastback, Porsche 944, 951 and 928.
I currently work in international sales for a one of the largest commercial truck manufacturers. Trained as a Industrial Engineer. Blessed to have always worked in the automotive industry which has been my passion.
We needed a vehicle which would allow us to carry the family of my wife, 3 sons and the occasional visits from their 2 grandmothers. It was difficult to find a Disco 7 seater. I looked around at 20+ Discos before we settled on this low mileage SE. It was all stock with no head gasket work. However, the records showed periodic major preventative maintenance done by the previous lady owner who lived in the local area. There was no sign of abuse or off-roading.
The first project was to convert the 5 seater to a 7 seater using rear seats, rear step, belts and trim parts from a local salvage yard. Recent work done over the past few weeks of ownership: ODB2 check (no fault codes), change to Disco 1 wipers, oil change and filter, air con blower cleaning, DVD/navigation bypass, flat4 trailer wiring, throttle heater gasket change, new front rotors and pads.
More fun coming up.... transmission oil and filter change, transfer case oil change, diff oil change, front driveshaft change, warm climate thermostat and coolant change.
I am looking forward to (hopefully) great years with the Disco and return to my first love. Thanks to those in this forum who have been a great help over the past
