I'm excited to own a Land Rover which I bought on Friday. It's a 2001 Discovery II. Has some miles (127k) and isn't perfect. But its a heck of a lot of fun to drive and I'm looking forward to getting it in good working order.

I have the 3 amigo lights to fix so I'll be seeking out an ABS amigo scanner if anyone wants to sell or rent me one. I also can hear that chirping beneath the front of the truck and I bet the front drive shaft is about to go. If anyone could recommend a good US parts supplier I would be very grateful.

This site has already been a remarkable resource in showing me what expect and know. I can't wait to start contributing.

Park truck until shaft removed or replaced. Chirp indicates failure is at hand, when it lets go, the shaft will poke a large hole in the transmission. This is a serious $7000 dealer repair issue for another transmision. You can rebuild shaft joints (see write up in our tech section) yourself or by a shop.

 

Yep the truck is parked. After reading some posts here, it sounds like rebuilding the joints yourself is hell. If it's indeed a 6-12 hr job, I would have to pay a shop $300+ in labor plus parts to do it. A replacement shaft is $400 online. Is there some reason I wouldn't just buy a new one? It sounds like rebuilding is more trouble than its worth.

If you want to buy a good, solid front drive shaft that's fully greaseable, check with lr2001silver. He supplies one hell of a nice product.
