Hello!
I'm a 53 y.o. commercial aircraft mechanic with a lifetime of car experience, from my first car, a '69 Plymouth Roadrunner, and on through 70 Charger RT/SE, military Jeeps ('53 M38-A1), Scouts, Lincolns, 2.2 L Dodge Daytona Turbo Z, Jaguar XJR and XJ6, BMWs, Volvos, Volkswagen TDi, many iterations of GM and Ford vans, trucks, etc.
Got into the Land Rover World on a current restoration of a 1988 Land Rover 110 2.5 Turbodiesel, RHD. Good frame and engine, typical rusty bulkhead, floorboards, seatbox. Doing it for a buddy. All mechanical, interior, welding, bodywork by yours truly.
Recently acquired my own 2004 Discovery 2 HSE TRAIL Edition. Body, undercarriage, and interior are almost perfect. No rust. Big issue is cracked/broken flexplate. The engine sounds nice and quiet. Drove it home about 12 miles with rear air suspension on the bump stops. Turned out to be a broken height sensor arm. Getting ready to drop gearbox and transfer case to replace flexplate. Will replace all u-joints, rear-drive coupling, rear main seal, automatic gearbox seals xfer case seals, oil pan gasket. Everything that needs maintenance between the engine and the ground.
I'm always open to learning more and trying new things. I'm very excited about my new Disco. Plan to do light suspension mods (start with rear airbag spacer and front springs), 32" tires, Needs new F/R bumpers as both are cracked. I figure the only things included in the Trail package are the badge and the now nonexistent front bumper loop and lights (there is still a switch for them on the dash.) Will add winch/bumper, skid plates, rock sliders, and possibly roof rack.
Which OBD diagnostics do y'all recommend? I want something that'll reset 3 amigos, calibrate SLABS, program keys, and ascertain correct mileage between BCU and blinking instrument panel odometer, along with all the usual OBD resets, code reading, OUIJA communication
(LOL) etc.
I'm looking forward to many years with Land Rovers. So stoked!
Thanks!
Hi LRDoc. I’m a 62 yo commercial aircraft mechanic with a Land Rover problem. If you’re going to stay into LR’s you should probably get a Nanocom Evolution, or if you feel rich a Nanocom Faultmate. The Evo will do the vast majority of what you’ll ever need for diagnostics. For your technical D2 questions put your posts in the Discovery 2 part of this forum. You’ll get more views there and lots of good help.
