New guy here. Interested in becoming a rover owner. I'd like to get into a used unit. This would be a replacement for a '99 Ford Explorer v6. I'm looking for a little more space (at minimum, no less space) and same or better towing. Not sure where to start, any/all advice welcome. Figure on replacing current by next year, and would like to be in the $10k-$12k range.

I'm wondering what to look for as well as what to avoid. I can do some of my own work, for general service and maintance, but serious rebuild (engine, trans) are out of my league due to time and resources. I also have an auction connection if I can tell him what to look for.

Plan on new radiator and new front drive shaft. Your research will show you why. That's on a D2. Download the RAVE (factory manual set) below, and in owner's manual look at page for warning lights. Be sure these come on at startup, then go out. People will obscure the lights to cover defects.

If at all possible, pre purchase inspection. An hour or two of your mechanic's time is worth it. A great many of these vehicles are sold when overheating has started and they are in need of head gaskets.

And a lot more items to service than your Ford, where many things are sealed for life. But neither Ford (Explorer or Expedition) nor Discovery can match the cavern of space in a minivan.
