Which is more practical and better all around for BSA camping? P38 or 2003-04 Disco?
Hey guys,
I'm really active in my local BSA troop and wanted to know which vehicle would be better in practicality, space, refinement, maintenance, reliability, and overall value. I usually have to haul a lot of gear such as backpacks, folding chairs, tents, footlockers, cooking equipment and the like. I would go for a small SUV like an LR2, Freelander or something else but high ground clearance and 4WD are definite requirements because we often go in and out of hills, muddy roads, very dusty, sandy, and narrow areas, and the like. Both of these cars are in my budget of $0-$25,000. I would get an LR3 but for some reason, the design really turns me off compared to the old Discos, and besides, someone in the troop recently bought an LR3 so in my opinion, it's a bit embarrassing to have very similar vehicles.
Thanks!

I forgot to add this in my first post, but are there any performance accessories that you can get for the vehicles with the 4.6 L engine? I've test driven a 2002 Range Rover HSE 4.6 and A 2004 Disco HSE and on both occasions I found them to be a bit sluggish in terms of maneuvering around traffic with ample acceleration and that there are a lot of aggressive drivers around the South Alabama area where I live. I would like the vehicle to be at least 0.5-1.0 seconds quicker than stock without a big penalty in fuel economy which is already pretty dismal to start with. Also, I am rather tall (6'3) so how roomy are these vehicles for us tall lads?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I like Rovers but looking at your description of what you want to do, I don't think any of the ones you listed are going to work. All of them are quite small, and will only seat part of a patrol and their gear. When I was a SM, I had a full size Bronco and it was not very practical. One of my ASM's had a Suburban and could get a patrol, their gear and a big portion of the troops equipment in it. (I also had another ASM with a 4 wheel drive full size American van which was real handy at times as well). What I'm saying is that if you think about it, even a Range Rover isn't that big if you're talking about capacities.

oilspotLR, I have found a 2004 Disco HSE in Birmingham, AL for $22,800 that looks perfect from both the pictures, the CARFAX, and the description. Epsom Green on Alpaca Beige, 1 owner with 85,000 miles. The price is a bit high, but I can do some negotiating. Here she is: http://www.rmr4x4.com/web/vehicle_photos/485857
threalassmikeg, I would just get an LR3 but as I said in my first post, there is something about that body that I don't like, things like the grille, and because I'm on a $0-$25,000 budget, I can only get a 2005-07 model with (in my opinion) the really cheesy looking plastic wheel flares and bumpers, plus I think the interior isn't as good looking as the old Disco. I do like the LR4 a lot more, but even a 2010 model is twice as much then what I can afford.
Bkreutz, Absolutely no patrol boxes are going into our vehicles, we have trailers to carry patrol boxes, folding tables, canopy's, and things like that. I'll probably be carrying mostly my personal equipment and maybe some troop gear like Coleman stoves and some other miscellaneous things like that.
And by the way, here is the P38 I am looking at (It's a bit far away from me but my wife works as a F/A for Delta so I get to fly for FREE!

And by the way, earlier in the year, I was looking at RR Classics but then I read more about them and concluded they're too slow, too unreliable, and not very well built, the first thing I want in a car.
