Which is more practical and better all around for BSA camping? P38 or 2003-04 Disco?
#31
I don't know, that's what they said when I called the dealer, maybe they're lying... And I don't know what you mean by a 25 year old car, it's a 2004, so what are you talking about?

Man if I had the price range you do, say 20-23k. I would find an 03-04 Disco with a blown motor. You could probably find one for $3500. Then you could drop a new turner 4.6 motor with the performance cam shaft(should get you another 20 hp). Then you still have money for tires and a lift, snorkel, and any other crap you want. Maintain it right and it will last you forever. That would be a badass Disco.

Bkreutz, you make a good point, that stuff that the dealer said about it being LHD and all that is probably Bull****, it probably started life as a US spec 4.6 and had the motor ripped out and converted to a diesel but it doesn't matter, I don't want it anyway. DiscoRover007, I have to say, I never thought about finding a Disco with a screwed motor and putting a rocket motor in it, If the prices were right, $3500 for a body and $7-10,000 for a motor, that would be about the same price as a really nice used one. Speaking of really nice used Discos, here's some links of a couple Discos that look really nice:
2004 Land Rover Discovery for sale at Elite Auto Wholesale
The things that attracted me to this one is that it has a little over 100,000 miles, so the big problems like the head gaskets, the U-joints, and the SLS have probably been taken care of. Another thing is that it appears to have all the options, such as the third-row seat, rear A/C, and a kinda tacky rear seat video system. And even though it's kinda far away in VA, the scenery driving up there is gorgeous, so it would be worth the time and effort to go get it.
Here's the other one I found:
Used 2004 Land Rover Discovery HSE for Sale by Carpoint Dfw
Now unlike the other one, I'm a little bit more sheepish on this one because even though it has 16,000 less miles then the other one, this vehicle's current mileage is right about everything starts falling apart like the head gaskets, the SLS, and the other stuff, plus this one doesn't have all the options that the other one has.
So, which one do y'all think is the best pick?
Thanks!

Ive seen D2's with bad motors go for 1k!! For a grand maybe 2k you would have your base. Then add 10k for motor your at 11k-12k. Then with a lift, tires, snorkel, skid plates you could touch 16k-18k. The big thing is though if you put a motor in it, its a brand new motor, its less likely to have a issue like the 100,000 mile disco. Oh and just so you know, don't ever assume the major issues like head gaskets, u-joints, sls have been fixed. A) They could be happening now thats why they are for sale. B) Head gaskets go whenever they want so its not guarantee your good for awhile.

please don't spend 20+ on a disco 2. I'm not gonna tell you what do do with your money, but make sure it's really perfect, and have a professional go over it with a fine tooth comb.
If you're willing to travel to nj for a car let me know i'll put together really nice 04 disco2 with a rebuilt engine with tophat liners same color as the one you're looking at but not a 7 seater, A white 06 LR3 with g4 accessory package or a next to perfect 99black P38 range rover approx 70,000 This one I may have trouble prying from my Sons cold dead hands.
pm me seriously
is this LR3 too tacky for you you'd be the coolest scout master in the crowd!
