A word of warning.
We are talking Pajero 2.8TD diesel here.
Some time ago I used RTV to seal the interminable oil leaks from the rocker cover gasket. During the last week I have removed the injector pump for a new front oil seal and the starter motor due to issues (brushes and connections) hence I removed the rocker cover for timing TDC. Today I realised that using RTV on the rocker cover gasket was an extremely BAD move whatever my frustrations at the time I did it. I have wasted all day cleaning up the annular groove in the rocker cover which is now spotless. I have had to pack around the camshaft with workshop wipe paper and have been carefully scraping off the RTV from the gasket face on the head. It is a time consuming and laborious task with the risk of some rubbery RTV dropping into the voids in the head. I have found that Brake Cleaner partially dissolves RTV but not entirely or successfully, neither does cellulose thinners. This is by way of a word of warning to others who get peed off with rocker gasket oil leaks.
If anyone knows anything that dissolves RTV I would be pleased to try it as I'm still plodding on with my Poundland craft knife mini scraper (thank you Poundshop I knew it would come in useful someday) There must be a product available that can successfully dissolve RTV that I don't know about as yet as there is one to dissolve silicon mastic which is on the market. RTV is great gasket maker and sealant but NOT for rocker gaskets or anywhere it can get into oil or waterways. You have been warned.
