Default 1998 RR - Won't Start

Hey All

I found a 1998 HSE for sale for $2000. Owner says it was running fine, then the serpentine belt broke. He replaced the belt, but it will not start. I have not looked at it yet but wanted to get an idea before I invest any time here. So serpentine belt on a 1998 RR - related to not start? Catastrophic or not?

Thanks!

My guess is the belt broke because something in the path of the belt failed... Tensioner, water pump, etc. When the belt fails the engine overheats. You know the rest of that story.

So failure to start really could be anything and may or may not be related to the belt breaking but you can bet there is more to the belt breaking story...

If the truck is in perfect condition otherwise you are looking at the same repairs as a D2 would have with similar symptoms. With a non running engine you should be able to talk that price down by half.

Good luck!

I agree, same repairs as a D1 in this case, assuming it’s mechanical. P38’s have a lot more going on electronically though. I also agree with half the price. Once it’s sorted, you will really love the P38.

I have a P38 and love it but it's tricky.

The entire most important part for the entire vehicle is a working fob. And the issue is the North American P38 fobs are no longer available from Land Rover. You can't relearn a fob like you can with the Discovery. There is only 1 person who is in Wales that can create one for the North American market.

Also, 1999 was the refresh year. Interior parts for the 1995 1/2 to 1999 are hard to come by. Lots of the interior colors changed slightly in 1999. As for the engine its the 4.0 with the GEMS management system. The GEMS parts are getting harder to get also.

Why are you omitting the 4.6 option for the P38? Or are you just mentioning the one you happen to own?

BTW can I get the contact info for the guy in Wales who can create a new NA fob? Been running without one for a few years now.

Thanks!

I may be wrong on the 4.6 but I think the 4.0 was the only option for the year he was looking at

Here is the website for Classic Rides North Wales.

Ask for Les.

And I’m fairly sure that you could get a 4.0 or a 4.6 on any year P38

Thanks for the contact info,

And yes the 4.6 was available in all years of the P38.
