It can be anything, from a bad piston, camshaft, timing, etc. Take it in to the dealership asap ( if you haven't already ).

This just happened with my 18 RRS diesel.I took my car in for regular service and my service manager noticed a noise and found out the issue to be the rod bearing is/was going bad and there are metal flakes in the oil filter. I need a new engine. My car has 37k miles.

Land Rover approved the engine replacement so will wait until all the work is done.

It’s just odd I never noticed any issue with past diesels and quite frankly I love the engine I think sales played a big part of the discontinuation of the engine not reliability.

I had a 2016 Td6 that started exactly in this manner. Took it to the dealer and the resolution was to replace the engine! Three months later I got it back and the heavy ticking was resolved. Seems like there is a TSB on it and is a known issue.
