Default International Rover

So, I bought my Disco early this Spring to ship to Germany to be used as my daily driver for the next three years. I am in Germany now, near Nuremberg in Bavaria, and my Disco is going to be shipped to me early next month. Anyone ever ship their Rover overseas? Anyone in the Bavaria area? Just thought it would be fun to see who is out there and what their experences are.

Dude, stupid as hell to ship an American disco to Europe. Buy a defender or disco diesel and you got alot more options. Besides, you are in the military and no way in hell are you gonna be able to afford premium gas on your budget while living in Germany. Its gonna cost more for a gallon of premium then two gallons of diesel in the states.

Plus do yourself the favour and buy a used defender from say 1986 and below to ship to the states when you want to come back. Then while you have it build a newer engine and other parts into it so you can get a legal defender into the states without the extra costs. Then when you get the vehicle over to the states sell it for 40 grand or more.

A defender with a T5 engine goes for a ton of money to collectors. Rich guys are willing to pay thru the nose for a defender for a diesel engine in it.

What he said, you should have put your Disco in storage, they are a dime a dozen in Europe.

Not to pick a fight, but Rovin4life and Spike555 should have listened to Mark Twain when he said, "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

What they don't know is that #1) Discos are not "a dime a dozen" in Germany. In the almost 8 weeks I have been here I have seen two - one of which I drove three hours to see after a buddy found it online for sale. Defenders for that matter are also scarce, and in order to bring one home, it must either be 25 years old or North American spec. Either way, if they qualify to ship to the States the price is extremely high. #2) As for fuel prices, I pay less for premium fuel on Post here than I was paying in Colorado. So the two of you may be the ones who are "stupid as hell."

Spike555, I use to look to your posts for guidance, I see now I need to take what you post with a grain of salt. A tiny bit of research and you could have found what I already know.

Rovin4life, thanks for questioning my intelligence for choosing to bring MY Disco over with me, and assuming I am too poor to pay for fuel. BTW, you too could have done some research and found out that military officers make decent money, all things considered. I am not topping Forbes, but I do just fine.

I normally look to this forum for information and a place to connect with like-minded Land Rover enthusiasts, you two have made me consider dropping my registration. I started this thread to see if anyone else has been or is in the Germany area with their Rover, not to be insulted by two people with nothing useful to say on the subject.

Being here in the US, we wish we had more access to old "gold" diesel Rovers at great prices. And gas is cheaper on base, I had a pal in naval intel (two mutually exclusive terms) that would by old Jags when the Brits couldn't afford the "petrol" while he was based there. Another pal shipped his fuel injected 427 Corvette from San Diego to Pearl Harbor, only to find that the on base speed limit of 25 mph was strongly enforced. Hated driving the car in low gear, sold it to a dentist.

I, for one, salute Gator Ritt, and hopes that he enjoys his off duty time with the Disco. And should he happen upon a steal of deal on the right diesel Rover, maybe he could ship that back as well.

As a cunning and clever warrior, I hope that he does not enter a battle of wits with an un-armed opponent like me.

Buzz, thanks for the salute. Of course I am looking for a steal on any type of Landdy. But I was doing that even in the states. I was reluctant buying my first LR, but I am hooked now.

I will get pics of the Rover up as soon as I get it over here and start getting out and about in it. It is scheduled to ship form FL on 12 SEP and should be in port by 10 OCT.

As for Pics of beautiful Germany, I will post some tonight (morning in the States) after work. I came from Colorado, and this place gives that gorgeous state a run for its money!

Wifey has worked at Ft Stewart (civilian DoD) for 20+ years. The old 24th and the 3rd ID have spent a great deal of time rotating to Germany, when not being exceptionally busy in various garden spots. Have not noticed a lot of non-US Landys, but they could certainly have been hauled back. One very popular thing to bring back appears to be a German bride. Enjoy your travels, stay out of the fast lane on the Autobahn, stay in until retirement, then become an asset to any company here and have another 20 year career.
