Default Electrical problem with starter

Electrical Problem: Series III 88' Turn key, starter engages and engine fires but as soon as the key is moved back to its normal start position the engine stops. I've replaced the starter switch, that was not the problem. Could it be the starter solenoid? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wires on the starter barrel not on the correct terminals. I had the same problem. Mines is a petrol engine though with a diesel barrel.

Looked at from the end of the barrel the double big terminal has 2 brown wires attached, one to starter and one to solenoid, then clockwise the red and white wire from the solenoid, then the white wire to the coil. The other spade is empty.

Worth a try.

If it is fitted with a ballast resistor this will be burnt out, to do a quick test too see jump a wire from the bat pos to pos on the coil (not the side going to the distributor, if it starts look at the ballast resistor
