Default RR P38 trans problem

Hi all

Have a 2001 Range Rover P38 4.6 which I have a trans problem with...

When I have been driving 1-50 km depends on what mood the car is in, then it will start so slip in the gear, like a broken clutch on a man. trans, and then suddenly the car won't move more... Then I can turn it off wait 3-4 min. and then drive a little again like 500-1000m.

The computer do not tell, that anything is wrong!!!

Can any help with this problem... ???

When was the last fluid change? Is the level correct?

First check the fluid like Wilson suggested. When the problem occurs, does the transmission respond if you manually put it in 1st, or reverse?

After this happend, I tried to change the fluid, and the car started driving again but only approx. 50 km, then it stopped again... But as there was oil in the cooler, I could only get approx. 5 liter changed.

The trans don't repond at all, when this happens. It's like the trans don't get any oil pressure, and therefore won't run...

Did you pull the pan or just drain and refill the fluid? Before you can troubleshoot it you need to make sure the fluid is at the correct level and the filter is clean. Also, look at the pick-up tube when you have the pan off. Is it broken? My p38 had a broken pick-up tube when I bought it. What type of fluid are you using? If you don't already have it, you need to download the Rave manual. The transmission fluid change/check procedure is in there.

When I bought mine I looked like the fluid hadn't been changed in a long time so dropped the pan and replaced the filter and fluid. I also drained and replaced the fluid at the next two oil changes and now the fluid is nice and clean. I also added two bottles of Lucas transmission treatment. That stuff works great.

When I was in college I bought a Honda Accord with 225k miles on it. The transmission was shifting so hard into 2nd that it made you cringe. I had a neighbor back home that had the same year car with a bad motor so I was planning on swapping transmissions on my summer break. I added a bottle of Lucas to the tranny and within two weeks it was 75% better. By summer break it was shifting so well that I didn't bother to change the tranny. I kept the car for a few more years and sold it with 314k miles on it. I saw the car around town for a couple years after that. The body was falling off but I'm pretty sure it drove itself to the junkyard. A lot of people think Lucas doesn't do anything but I have seen it make a world of difference in several cars that I have owned.

It could definately be the pick up tube or a clogged filter, it is only about $40 for a replacement so I suggest you buy one. You could have a failing forward pump but it not very common, usually then it will hesitate to shift into gear to begin with. Even with clean fluid if the filter is clogged then it will not do you any good.
