Default Extended Warranty Providers

Hi all, I am brining my truck in for final 40/50k mile service before the manufacturer warranty on m 22 expires due to mileage. I plan to keep the truck, but likely will get an extended warranty. Just wondering what companies other members have used as i want to make sure it covers electrical issues (such as the headlight replacement, i already had one replaced under warranty).

I believe they are all third party extended warranties (nothing direc through Land Rover) correct?

BK

Not a whole lot of decent extended companies out there....
At your mileage, you may be a bit late for a JLR "sanctioned" warranty. What do I mean for that ? They (JLR) sell a 3rd party warranty they usually respect and don't give you the run around. However, it has to be done before you hit 20k miles. It is not cheap by any means, and kinda varies from dealer to dealer...price wise. I am afraid that you missed that boat.
Then, before you hit the expiration time, you may try to find a dealer which may CPO the vehicle. Will cost a pretty penny, but....with the prices of repairs these days it is worth it.
If that is not viable for you, then is anyone's guess which company may be decent or half way decent.
Wishing you luck on this endeavor.

I would suggest a good exclusionary low-deductible warranty but I don't know who you'll find to offer one. I'm going to wild guess these are probably in the top ten least reliable vehicles being sold at the moment. The warranty the JLR dealership sold me on my Defender was a third-party exclusionary zero deductible one and was not cheap but it had to be sold with the car when it was brand new. I got back a prorated amount when I traded it in. For other companies that might sell one (maybe endurance?, you'll have to call around) I worry that you may end up having to pay a substantial sum given JLRs dreadful reliability. For example I was thinking about a preowned LR4 at one point in time and couldn't even find a company that would sell me a warranty on it (period). I was told not offered on 'those'. That killed that idea real quick. It's too bad I love the looks of those things even today.

To be honest, there is no deal in extended warranties. I have always bought them at purchase time through the Land Rover dealer, since they sold it, I can beat them up about it. I really never had a problem with them though. The first one I got was good value return on the P38, the L382 never had a claim but the key fob (which is actually super expensive). The Defender and my wife's Evoque have it as well. I did get the extended extended coverage on my wife's car and it has paid off in wheels and rims, two so far. On the aftermarket, if they are reasonably riced, they will not pay for anything and drive you around the twist. The one we got on the VW Tiguan comes to mind, complete waste of money and eventually had a class action lawsuit to get compensated. So that sucked. Ones that do actually pay for issues on your car will charge you through the nose. It is mathematics, they have to make money. So there are two options: reasonably priced, but pay for nothing or overpriced and pay for some items. Then there are the ones that take your money but go bankrupt a year later.

I looked into this for a bit. I found after calling 9 different LR dealers that they don’t want to sell you Land Rover’s warranty. They want to sell you their “dealership, dealership network” warranty. Most priced @7k for 7yr/100k mileage. That’s three times what I paid on other warranties from other European makes.

They know they have a negotiating advantage over you after you purchased the vehicle, so negotiate a better price before you buy. Otherwise, self insure.

The Defender has already proven to be more reliable than other JLR products. Of course there’s some cross model parts, but the new plant is supposedly following Toyota’s manufacturing model, so that’s encouraging. Time has provided the opportunity for improved versions of early problematic parts. My Defender was built more than 4 years after the initial release and the issues I’ve read about from early adopters are not present in my 10/23 build. Of course, given time this can change.

If it does, I’ll sell the Defender and go back to an older model Toyota if I don’t have the stomach for the risk. The recently released comparables, ie Land Cruiser, GX, and 4Runner are new and it would be a mistake to presume they “inherited” the durability and reliability of earlier production years. They are now software defined vehicles like the Defender without the benefit of 4 years of bug fixing.

Personally, after having a negative ownership experience with a newly released model 23 Toyota, I’ve come to the conclusion that the pandemic and new models reset the presumption of reliability across all manufacturers. If all are basically average, I chose to buy a LR Defender since many owners reported no issues over their 100k journey over the prior 4 years. It has a head start. I certainly don’t think there’s any evidence that it’s any less reliable than other current generation SUV’s .

Appreciate the replies. I have the p400. Overall has been reliable to date. Just had a start stop issue that was resolved with software update and replacement of one of the headlights due to DRL.

I willl see what dealership offers but not holding my breath as many have said....

In Austin, Sewell sells Major Guard and IIRC a 3 year extended warranty (from when the factory ends) is like $7-8k. They will discount $500 with ease, but that’s it.

my 2020’s factory warranty ends in early June based on time. I have 42k now. All the early issues have been sorted by now for me.

I’m thinking of self insuring and using an Indy shop for all software resets, etc. haven’t priced out what kind of rates between dealer and Indy yet to see what I can get for $7-8k and then just wing it…

My dealer sells an ASC warranty, which was around $3700 for a three year, 36k mile warranty and a four year, 48k mile warranty was only around $100 more. And this is their "factory style" warranty that covers everything in the manufacturer's original warranty. I'll go for it when my warranty is up next year.
