Default Need brakes at 20,000 miles?!

My reward for putting first 20k miles on my truck, it came up with 'Brake service required" yesterday.

Not truly amazed because I live at the top of ("Ridge Runner Rd") and 4+ miles unpaved / gravel, but seems kinda low.

Best replacement pads for someone who uses them - a lot!? Maybe a slotted version?

I'm still on original brakes on both our Defenders...40K miles on our 2021 and 32K miles on our 2023. FWIW, after many, many miles complied by LR4 forum drivers, we concluded that OEM pads and rotors lasted longer than any aftermarket pad or rotor. And the LR4's went through brakes faster than Defenders, typically every 25K miles or so.

13,000 miles on mine and no visible wear on brake discs or pads.

Discs still look new.

Around 33000 mi on our MY2023 110x - including trailer hauling. No brake issues or premature wear I"m aware of - will know next week how they faired for wear with a detailed inspection as I'm taking it for service before our forthcoming +3000mi road trip.

I expected about half what most get or roughly 50,000 miles, so really not too bad.

I need to curb my enthusiasm going down the mountain southbound - toward Asheville.

Guys, what should I expect? Costd for JLR doing it, and recommendations ? Surely there are bettee drilled or slotted pads! Just getting started looking...

Can GAP iiD tool be used to turn this pernicious warning that pops up every time you start?

You may not find better aftermarket rotors or pads. The Defender brakes work really well, create minimum brake dust, don't squeak when backing and if most of us are getting 50K miles out of them, that's all good.

You may only need rear brakes. On the LR4, dealer charged about $750 for rear pads & rotors and $800 for front pads & rotors. LR4 went through rears faster than fronts. The Defender brakes will cost more since it has bigger rotors (and the rising cost of car parts since we last owned an LR4). I'd call a couple of dealers to get a quote on a Defender brake job.

If you go with an indy mechanic, know that most JLR rear brakes have a procedure where you put the parking brake in service mode when servicing the rear brakes. If they screw this up, you quickly destroy the parking brake pads on the ride home along with a strong burning clutch smell. This happened on our LR3 and since then I only have the dealer replace the brakes on our JLR vehicles.

22,800 on mine and I have about 7mm of pads left on all 4. I pull a tandem axle trailer with a heavy SxS often. Trailer does have brakes however.

I was quoted at the dealership for my 2020 Defender $2200 for rear brakes, rotor and sensor. Is that NORMAL?

I have nearly 28k miles on my 22 Defender 90 and the dealer sent me videos today of the rear brakes at about 6mm and the fronts at about 8mm left with the rotors looking fine. Said I'm good for quite a while and all looks good. (They were checking because I had complained about a rattle in the B pillar to which they're answer is they can't do anything for me under warranty because I have "non-JLR approved accessories on the vehicle." I have Mickey Thompson tires, Thule crossbars and a tailgate table so they're using that to say that must be what's causing the rattle. The rep even said on the video he sent, "Defenders aren't engineered for tires with this aggressive of a tread pattern." lol)

But anyway, back to the point of this thread. My brakes look great at 28,000 miles. I have done some running up and down fire roads, camping, etc. But mostly my Defender just gets driven around Charlotte, NC.

.
I'd be hauling his butt up to the front of class so he can explain to me in person why he thinks that this designed for offroad, adventure/lifestyle vehicle isn't designed for a subjectively aggressive tread pattern...
