Default Oil Change new to me Defender

I just picked up a 2024 xdynamic with 4500 miles that was traded in on a new grenadier. I got the service receipt and they changed the oil with Mobil super synthetic 0w20 which doesn’t meet the LR spec. I am probably overthinking this but should I go ahead and change the oil again now or wait a few thousand miles.

Congrats on your almost brand new Defender. Seems odd they would change the oil so early. Most of us agree the recommended 21K is too long and are going with 10K oil change intervals. Since it is still under warranty, I would put the correct oil in it and save the receipt proving you did so.

Here is the oil you want to buy:

Really easy to do yourself:

Yes, change it. And then change every 5k. Anything longer is marketing depts trying to please the epa. Oil is cheap. Engines aren’t.

LR have now ditched the older spec on the Special Tec.

Top Tec is the oil that meets their refined requirements now.

OEM Castrol of course too but it’s twice the price.

l very much doubt that the Mobil 0w/20 will harm your engine. lt's a premium oil designed for vehicles like the Defender.

But if you are worried about it, just change it again for one of the recommended oils.

I would run it and would not change it again until the vehicle told me to. Not looking to debate, just throwing in my 02.

This is why I am torn - do I just wait a few thousand miles and then change it. The risk is low anything is going to happen but if it does then I would be worried about the warranty.

Who used the Mobil 1? JLR dealer or another dealer?

Grenadier dealer - it was traded in on a new Grenadier.

I’ve been using Mobil 1 ESP X2 0W-20 which used to be covered by Land Rover STJLR.51.5122 and STJLR.03.5006 oil specifications until recently. I know the formula hasn’t changed, so I’m guessing something changed behind the scenes when it came to re-upping the licensing negotiations.

My vote is to keep it in for the remainder of this round, change it next time to one of the two listed above (Castrol or Liqui-Moly), and no harm no foul.
