What is this rattle? Rear Suspension Dampener? Will my rig be okay for another 1K Mi?
I had a similar issue (rear right side, rattled on rough roads). I discovered the nut below the sensor wasn't tight. I disconnected the sensor and torqued down the nut (spec is in the workshop manual) and that seemed to have cured it.
In my case after they were unable/unwilling to diagnose, I drove it with them and was able to demonstrate in 1 minute the issue and the off-road height resolution to the rattle. Finally they agreed that the shock mount was the issue. I'd previously shared with them the video in this thread to be greeted by incredulity.
They then supposedly replaced the mount only to be greeted by a suspension error.
Dealer decided after assuring me the shock was in top condition initially that the shock was indeed borked as I'd initially advised them.
Then they told me they'd replaced the shock and the error was still there.
Spoiler alert. They did sweet F.A all week and just thought it would be easier to lie to me and tell me they were closely working with JLR technical support. Shock was not replaced.
10 seconds for me to bend down and look under my vehicle to see the old shock in all its glory. Quite astounding lies.
Then they replaced the shock. Error went away. Top tier dealership experience here. Months of nonsense and lies and ineptitude. The usual broken clips and mal-positioned interior plastic panels came as standard of course.

@GavinC curious why yours required parts Replacements, whereas @denhams only needed the nut tightened.
I'm gonna tighten the nut in tomomorn and see if that fixes it. But maybe it will just temporarily fix it and the issue will return. Leading me back to the same question - how did you know the shock mount and the whole shock was broken?

had my dealer diagnosed it and addressed it promptly after I initially thought it to their attention one might argue the repair would have been a simple tightening of the bolt or new mount only.
As it transpired, mount was replaced and the suspension error was evident. I’d not be surprised if the shock was damaged by the tech. He was to put it politely, completely incompetent. I don’t say this without multiple data points demonstrating same.
now that I’m out of warranty I would definitely self repair. Simple things first and go from there.
short answer is I don’t know.
I tried tightening the rear driver-side mount nut, but it just turns and doesnt tighten. The nut on the passenger rear mount turns too, and that one isn't making a rattle. I've concluded that the nut appearing loose isn't the problem.
To clarify, the rear mount feels loose and there is play in the bolt when driving. You can feel the nut moving. The looseness is what's making the loud rattle.
guess I'm gonna take her to the dealership

@denhams how did you tighten the nut? When I tried, the nut just turns but never tightens. I tried the nut on the other side just to see how it behaved, even though it's not making the rattle, and it also just turned without ever rightening. Please share your method.
If yours doesn't tighten, then I guess the thread could be stripped or there's something else wrong in the shock itself.
**Update to my post from Oxt 26, 2024**.
Issue fixed!!
i had the rattling rear shock tower described by others in this thread. Dealer tighted the nut which eliminated the rattle, but rhey said there was damage to the shock so they ordered the parts and a few weeks later I returned so they could replace the entire shock assembly. Problem solved.
They told me that JLR acknowledges that this is "not an uncommon problem."

Thanks Denhams and Trailmix and GavinC for the "method" clarification and update!, as I was reading its was clear threads were already stripped... (don't ask me how I know this)
As a preventive measure I want to tighten mine before the rattle sound even starts. I am outside of warranty time and don't want the 3rd party warranty run around.
If Someone has done this in a 7 seater or have access to the workshop manual please send me the steps!!!
