how much noise does the raised intake make?

not really. the problem is the design of the rack front with its width, curve, and small built-in air dam. i bought some industrial 18 inch zip ties and managed to rig it on, and it held fast on a road trip from Vegas to park city at 80 mph plus much of the way. wind noise was reduced but still there given the high speed. I'll post some pictures at some point (I took several during the install) to give you an idea of what was going on with the rack design and why it doesn't fit well. I'm hoping some aftermarket dealers will come up with a dam specific to the factory rack. at this point I'd save yoiur money and pass on the Yakima.

I'm looking at a custom faring for the Expedition Rack. Anyone have a view on the best width of the faring? I'm measuring the rack at 49" but the roof is a little wider. Any thoughts on how 52" would look/fit? If this solution works out, I'll post pix for the forum.

Recommend the LR3 / LR4 Air Damn from Front Runner, HUGE difference (IMPROVED) but not totally absent. Ahh, trade offs, Form vs Function!

I've ordered a custom fairing from Colorado Fairing Company. I'll report back once I've installed and tested the fairing

I got my custom fairing in the mail today from Co Fairing, not quite sure how I’m going to attach it yet and it may need to be trimmed down a bit given the unique shape of the expedition rack. Pls post pix of your install! Thx.

strike that. The fairing is going to be too difficult for me to install and I’m personally better off with cross bars. Anyone in the upper Midwest need a roof rack?

That's disappointing to hear. I just got the shipping notification for my fairing. I was really hoping this would be a good solution.

I used this old gamivetti piece

from a previous rack and attached with three inch brackets from Home Depot. Bent the bracket another 15 degrees, drilled two holes and used a 2-1/2 inch bolt. Brought the wind noise down significantly.

I used a Gamivitti piece off my FJ62 and 3 inch brackets from Home Depot. Added 15 degree bend ad put in with 2 #8 bolts. Quick fix and made a major difference in wind noise from 60-90 mph.

I went with Colorado Fairing Company. Took me some time and testing to arrive at what, I think, is the best setup. It took cutting two slots into the stock wing deflector. But very small/minor and could be easily patched/hidden if I ever wanted to revert to no-fairing setup. The amazing part, I was able to achieve a 7db drop in wind noise at 80mph. I can have normal conversations and no longer have to adjust the volume of my radio when on the highway. Very happy.
