1999 D1 Rescue

Today the tires got changed out. the old ones were worn, and lots of cracks between the tread. driving home it seems to be less squirrely on the road. It used to wander to the right when I accelerated, and to the left when I touched the brakes. not so much now. I did not check to see what they put in for air pressure.
I picked up a set of lug nuts (all 20) and they are the wrong size.they are M14x1.5 and should have been M16x1.5 so the old ones went back on.
Hate to say it but I picked up a 'drive to work' vehicle, 2006 HHR for $1500... couldn't pass it up and as long as the snow is less than 8 inches, I'll be driving that to work and back. Should save wear and tear on the D1.

Had to replace a tire on the HHR so the 99 went back int service. On the way home, the temp gauge did a steady dance between 1/2 and past the H mark. I pulled over and there was no pressure on the tank, and fluid was not that hot. Level never wen down and no bubbles. It has a 180 degree thermostat and had steady heat all the way home. This thing is really pissing me off. I tried moving the connectors on the temp sensors and it did not make any difference.

Another snow storm and i had to drive the disco to work. this time i had the OBDII scanner plugged in. When the temp gauge maxed out, coolant temp was reading 195 on the OBDII scanner. When it dropped down to about 1/2 scale, it read 179 degrees. Kind of what I expected but wanted to be sure before I ignored the gauge.
On the plus side, the new tires did a good job in 3+ inches of snow with ice/packed snow underneath. Waiting on 2 guys who don't want to leave work early due to weather so I get to stay and wait for them....

a bit of an update. has the 180 thermostat still in there, heater doesn't get too warm when it is -20 degrees out, New tires snd it does a bit better driving . Temp gauge now has duct tape over it as it pretty much continuously bounces up and down. truck does a great job driving in blowing snow with 65 mph winds and white-out conditions. I have to admit the other vehicle is a more comfortable ride, and better gas mileage, but if the weather looks bad, I drive the Disco.

so for the last few months I have been driving the 200 HHR I picked up cheap. It is much more comfortable and lower to the ground (easier to get in and out of) Evaluating my needs for a Land Rover and it may be time to sell and stick with solid pavement. moving from a 22 year old vehicle to one that is only 16 years old....just less problems to work on.

Temp gauge goes high when circuit ohms are low, so it looks like you are getting an intermittent short to ground. Not a costly problem, usually fixed with some tape, but could take time to go hand-over-hand along the wire route from the sender to the gauge cluster. Look especially at locations that go through the fire wall or sheet metal, or near sharp or hot edges or screws. If the sender is bad, I think it usually goes low, but cheap (less than $20) to buy a new one to test.
I think getting in and out is not so easy too. Especially for my wife, but I'm used to it now. I am keeping my Rover. It takes me anywhere I want to go! If you sell, it will probably end up with some kid who wants to jack it up even higher, and that's good for him. Gives the next generation something to play with. It is so cool that these trucks are built tough, and all the parts we need are available.

The temp issue came up during the winter months and I can't work on it in colder temps since I have no garage, or even a driveway. Once I figured out the gauge was giving a bad reading, I just ignored it. Getting in and out is a lot tougher since I have had both knees replaced and the surgery did not go well. I love the truck as it will go wherever I want and does everything it is asked. but the HHR does get twice the MPG since it is a lighter vehicle with a smaller motor. Not in a big rush to part with the D1.
