Default 1997 Defender 90 Check Engine Light

Since 1997 the check engine light has been on.

I've replaced oxygen sensors, catalytic converter, etc.

The latest problem was the Mass Air flow sensor. I have found out that
the Land Rover OEM part is $1600, but the same thing is available plenty of places online for a little over $100. Is there a difference?

It still stays on, and the only way to get it to go off is to disconnect it.
What would cause this--it's been this way since it was new. What would fix it? It has 100,000+ miles on it.

L J Shaw.

1. What are the codes stored by the computer to turn on the engine light?

2. I bought a spare MAF from junkyard for $30. You can clean them, but you need to do it with the unit cold. There is a small wire inside that is heated to over 350F, you can't spray that with cold aerosol MAF cleaner (use stuff made for MAFs).

3. Without codes, any ideas would be a SWAG (scientific wild *ss guess).

4. Most auto parts stores will read codes for free. Write down the number, not the words, and post back. There is also a link to the GEMs ECU manual in my signature, which has the codes and what generates them listed.
