See attached. If you can feel the gasket sticking out, is that at the angle that matches the head, or the "scoop" of the valley pan? Also look at Wireless Inspection Camera - Great Deals on Wireless Inspection Cameras at Harbor Freight.

It feels like the angle of the head and much lower than I would suspect the valley pan to go. I actually pulled a piece off and it was a similar material as to what I would expect a head gasket...that is fiber sandwiched between metal. Is the valley pan gasket made of a similar material? I wish that diagram was shown fom the back side. I'd love to know there was a freeze plug or something similar in there and how far down the VP goes.

As to rainbows... I promise you will see one every day if you come for a visit IH. ;-)

Valley pan to head orientation is the same in front or back, so let that be your guide.

See attached from overhaul manual of the RAVE, notice item #4. Maybe just drawn there, to show that three are present on the block. Eric T just pulled his and posted.

I saw those (item #4) but I believe they are inside the bellhousing, not where this is leaking from for sure.

Wow, is that what my engine s supposed to look like under all the grease and muck? Very nice! I believe the gasket material/leak is coming from much lower than the VP, although both could be contributing to the gusher. Great idea on the front to back orientation Sav...duh, I should have thought of that!

I'm hoping I can have my neighbor help me tow it home today. Will the brakes be effective (enough for towing) without the engine running? Matt

Valley pan gasket is foam sandwiched metal. Sounds like external coolant loss from rear water jacket through head gasket. I got a HG kit from British Pacific for 110 shipped.

That's also what I am thinking Eric. I've been following your adventure, thanks for all the pictures and posts...big job. Where in OR are you? I was living/stationed in Coos Bay/North Bend just a few years ago.

What is the difference between the three sets/kits at BP besides price?
