Default 1998 Disco I Valley Pan Gasket Replacement

Hi Folks,

Finishing up a head hasket replacement job (among other items). When installing the valley pan gasket, does the rubber end gaskets on the engine with a bit of silicone go on the engine first, then the valley pan gasket sets on top of that, then the metal ends with bolts go over that? Sorry if its vague. The diagram (#22) appears to show two of the metal ends only. After that, I just carefully set the intake manifold over that and line everything up? I've had non-rover buds tell me to put a bit of silicone on the intake too...Appreciate any guidance...
Thanks
Scott

That picture is kinda misleading, you put the rubber seals on the block first (I use ultra black gasket maker on the rubber, but there are multiple opinions on that), then the "paper" intake gasket, then the metal pieces on the top.

LIttle rubber gaskets on first.
Put a little permatex non-hardening on the lip of the engine block first.
And, put dabs of permatex in the corners where the heads meeting block.

Put on the rubber piece on each end.

Then the valley gasket.
Then the metal retainers with the bolt.

You can see pictures of this at

Look for the flickr pictures.

jfall, thanks. I actually read and reread your procedure to perform the work. The intake went on and I followed the modified Rover torque procedure. Put the valve covers on and then lost my 12 point 8mm...Have burned at least an hour...Still haven't found...Is there a black hole in Rover engine compartments?

I bet your socket is under the intake manifold on top of the valley gasket.

or hit the floor and rolled

or sitting on the frame

you need a bright light to look for it

I heard the socket hit once, then nothing. Usually you will hear it hit once or twice then the floor. Looked for an hour on Sunday and Monday. Behind starter, valley gasket, tranny, front axle, suspension, wheel well area...tried shaking the vehicle. Hmmmn
