I can see all of the ports I believe but the oil is caked on to the point of being a hard layer. The rockers have a pretty hard time rocking...

Any suggestions on removing that layer of burnt oil?

synthetic oil is a better cleaner than straight petroleum...also there are many "engine flush" products out there...napa has a good one....might give it a try...

Kerosene, diesel fuel, carb cleaner all work if you let soak for awhile. Green Scothbrite pads remove what's left. I use Shell Rotella T6. I now have 182k and rocker assembly still looks clean and wet.

I cleaned out and reinstalled my rocker cover. It did quiet things down a little but the major issue seems to be there still. To me it almost sounds like a miss fire or something or somekind of vacuum leak. I do notice that there is a perfomance loss lately - like does not have the acceleration it did before my overheating problem.

I change the oil today to Rotella 15w-40 and put on a mobile oil filter.

I think I'll do the compression test now as well as look at the spark plugs and maybe search for vacuum leaks.

One thing I'm concerned about is the oil pump. I'm not sure it's working the way it's supposed to. If my oil pump was not working would it be obvious?

Thanks

Compression test numbers:

160
180
160
180
190
160
160
190

Are this numbers reasonable?

!0% variance was the number I've always remembered, you might put a tiny bit of oil in those low cylinders and see if the numbers go up (rings) or stays the same (indicating valves). Are the 160 and 190 adjacent cylinders? Also givin the cost to rebuild these puppies I'd be inclined to just drive if you don't have head gasket issues.
