So can a T4 be sourced anymore? By standalone computer do you just mean a laptop running an appropriate OS?

I would have assumed that the cables would only differ by 14cux (94-95') and GEMS (96-99')

T4's occasionally pop up on Ebay. There is the T4 complete system PC & Handheld or just the handheld by itself. Lynx works great, but 10AS alarm wise it seems EXTREMELY buggy. Mess with anything 10AS wise with the Lynx = LR will no longer start which means you'd need a T4 or maybe an Auto Logic to sync the 10AS with the ECU. Nanocom & the Hawkeye are D2 and up.

I had a customer ask me a question last night, went out and tested the Lynx on my 97 D1 and bingo 10AS was no longer unlocked/synced, I just grabbed a spare 10AS and re-programmed my Fob, but I will not mess with the Lynx and 10AS stuff anymore. For everything else the Lynx is great. The support just seems weak vs say Nanocom because I had a question regarding the 10AS programming and was told by Lynx to contact Britpart and then Britpart said to contact Lynx = poor support. I had an issue with my Nanocom and syncing a BCU to the gauge Cluster and Nanocom had a fix for me within a few hours!

They can be, I believe there are a few with laptops on ebay for 3k or so.
I was bidding on one out of the UK, full stand will all accessories and someone got it for just under $1k which was a steal to me.

THIS is the kind of thing that makes me want to bail on the Discovery altogether and go buy something made in the late 80s. Before all of this ECU crap. A 60 series Landcruiser or an old Bronco/K5. $1k-$3k could buy a running and driving D1!! Or the alternative... save up and buy a 200TDI or 300TDI defender.

All the T4 really handles on a D1 is the alarm stuff and adaptions, and key fobs. Rest can be handled by any decent OBD2 Reader for the most part.

That T4 shown above was basically the last of it's kind as it has the red VCM box. That was the last upgrade to the T4 before the newer stuff came out due to the LR3/RRS and newer full size RR. That was a deal at 1k no doubt!

I did all the VCM upgrades on Land Rover Austin's T4 units. They had Dell Laptops and a few Panasonic Toughbooks. The VCM required a mini hub to be installed, along with newer software.

I was very proud I got to upgrade the T4 system. It still was something cool I got to do for Land Rover Austin back in the day.

After close to a month now, I now have this beast RUNNING!!! Got the replacement computer yesterday afternoon and installed it this morning.... it fired rightup!! I did see the check engine light come on which it has not been doing so the computer did the trick. I parked it in the back yard for more testing before I am ready to drive it too far. gotta build my trust in it first, I was able to reset the radio using the code so life is good!!
All I can say is.... YEE HAW!!!!!

Great news.... so in the end it was just a dodgy engine ECU.
