Thanks, guys....I found a couple of TCs in the local yard for 165 USD...one's a '96, and the other is a '99 (which looks pretty clean).

I'm going back this weekend to pick one up (after I pop the plate to make sure it's not trashed, lol).

I'll report back next week.

Cool. Stay with it, it'll pan out for ya. I have 170k on mine without blowing a tc, tranny or motor (yet) and love that I can blow by Subi's all day.

Before I go busting knuckles, can I be sure the unit will fit, and is interchangeable?

My truck is a '97 NA model, and the salvage yard truck is a '99 NA model...other than the drain plug looking different, I couldn't see any differences in the cases....

AFAIK your good to go. 97 - 99 pretty much all the same birds with some minor improvements each year. Nothing changed drastically within the driveline to make a 99 not fit or work well. 94/95 work with each other and the 96 carried over some stuff from those years, some was new and some was changed in 97 from lessons learned in 96 being the first 4.0. Make sure the 99 is a D1 and not a D2.....just to keep things simple. Again the differences wheren't that wide but the D2 uses a dc front shaft.

My bad...it's a '98. Here's a couple of pics of it...can I tell if it's a D2 by this?

It's a D1 and it's a go....grab it.

99 1/2 to 04 are D2's.

Scouts that could be the illusive 98 D2 p38 Bosch lol

But seriously check the fluid and you should be fine, if there is a lot of slop in your drive shaft slip joints might want to grab those, also do u joints front drive shaft

Guys...I'm in the salvage yard now, a I have the TC out and on the ground, but the high/low lever on this one isn't moving, either. Should I be able to shift this ny hand, or is it dependant on the truck trans running, or electrical power going to it? I don't want to spend the money, if this one is also crapped out....

It could just be that the lever is frozen up/corroded/rusted. You should be able to move while the TC is out, I'm guessing it's the lever assembly that's seized up.
