Discovery 1 automatic transmission types
Hi
I just had my D2 TD5 destroyed is a vehicle accident, no one hurt but she's a right off.
I have a 1998 D1 300TDI with an automatic gearbox playing up, loosing drive.
I have been offered a low milage D1 Automatic gearbox for my D2 wreckage which was mechanically going well.
I am not sure if all D1 transmissions are the same.
Information I am seeking is:
Are all Discovery 1 automatic transmissions the same regardless if the come from a different year or engine type, diesel or V8's.
Would anything need to be changed if from a different engine type.
Would it be prudent to get transmission disassembled.
Are the torque converters the same on all models.
Any other things I should look out for.
Any assistance appreciated.
regards
Gino

You are likely not able to swap the transmissions.
There are two main differences between the ZF 4HP 22 and 4HP 24. First: Gear ratio. In 2003/2004, the Discovery was pushed to the 4.6L. In doing that, Land Rover pushed the transmission with a larger gear ratio in 1st & 2nd to get the vehicle in line with more horsepower. This is not an issue if you want it in the D1.
The second thing is the kick down. I have a D2 transmission - low mileage - sitting in the garage that I just got off eBay. I thought I could configure it to work on my D1. Nope. There is no mechanical kick down on the ZF 4HP24 - they use electronics. The ZF 4HP22 uses a cable that runs to the throttle body on the GEMS engines. This is the big difference between the 4HP22 & 24. You would certain love to have the different gear ratio and bigger torque converter. But, you have no way of plugging in the electronic kick down.

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
I might have confused the information.
I was not looking to put a D2 into a D1, I was after details of the D1 transmissions if they were the same from a D1 V8 or the D1 diesel versions and could be used.
