Default Expansion Tank Leak...

When it rains it pours I also found a Leak in my expansion tank on 97 Land Rover Disco SE7. Is it possible to fix the pin hole size leak or just buy a new tank. Thanks for your suggestions and help. Also any sites where to purchase one for the truck. Thank you..

I just replaced mine along with a reconditioned radiator and I will sell my old one for $25 delivered if you are interested. No leaks but chose to replace it while I was doing the rad replacement.

One weak spot usually becomes another, even if plastic welded, melted zip ties, JB Weld, etc. Can expect up to 15 PSI in there, at which point the cap vents. Tank usually saves the honor of the cap, by breaking along the seam and allowing rapid loss of coolant, quickly followed by warped heads.

Now for a real shady short term repair, if you can reach it, drill through the pin hole, and install a bolt with gasket and RTV.

Best to invest in another from independent sale, one of the dismantlers, or salavge yard if available.

I picked up one from my local parts place for around 40 bucks with a new cap last week. My cap wasn't sealing and i had the older black "prone to cracking" variety of expansion tank so i did some preventative maintenance and replaced both for good measure. Depending on where you are located you can pick up the expansion tank online from either Land Rover Parts & Rover Accessories From Atlantic British | Discovery, Range Rover, LR3, LR2, Defender, Freelander and Land Rover Series Parts & Accessories or Best prices on Land Rover & Range Rover parts and Accessories

Get one of the Heavy Duty white translucent ones. Paul Grant or Will Tillery might have one.

If yours is a black container, throw it away, they have a very high failure rate and were replaced years ago by Rover with the new white bottle.

What Mike and FishEH said. If you have a black one, it's time to pony up and get the new and improved version. I don't have any at the moment but they're not that expensive new. I think AB has them for under $50.

The black ones have a reputation of large crack all at once, which is loss of coolant quickly, an un-informed driver might not pull over and stop asap. So someone other than the skilled mechanic/Baja racer/expedition crew chief/owner might render the heads warped in record time.
