Battery died, swapped it out and now getting "code" input on radio.
Alas, I have manual but no sign of a radio code anywhere in the there or in the car

Happened to me on my 97 Disco1, Just call the dealership and ask for the service department. Tell them what happened and have your VIN number handy. They will give you a code to try. Enter it once. If it doesn't work then pull the radio out and get the serial number of the radio and call them back. They can look it up from that.
Happens all the time and they are used to it.
Good Luck!

^^^ yep, also when you enter the code, it will beep and probably do nothing. You need to sit with the key in the ignition in the second position for 30 min or so, it has to reset or something. I can't remember if the radio has to be on or not, I know the rover doesn't need to be running. Actually I don't think it works if it is running, has to be stopped.

Coded radio, they over engineered that, when the MAF is a heck of lot more expensive....
