Default Land Rover Discovery Engine knock

You can hear it in the morning, at first start up but goes away in a few seconds. It is also fine during the day. What do u think it is? It is a 4.0 Disco V8.

Hard to hear with my cheap speakers. Easier for you to hear with a mop handle or yard stick, press one side to ear and touch other end to things like valve covers, etc. 20W50 may be your new friend. At least 15W40. Mechanical oil PSI test will confirm if pump is normal.

Yea, i am running 15W 50 - 20W50 with Lucas oil stabilizer. It isn't using oil or running hot now, but it doesn't like going too fast. It is hard to find 20W 50 so i will not go any lower then 15W 40 Thanks

Does it only do it on a cold start up?

If so, it could be the 20w50 and lucas is causing some oil starvation on startup. That lucas stuff is thick, especially mixed with a 50 weight oil. May want to try some oil with better cold pump-ability.

Just a thought

You might be right the 20w50 and Lucas oil is causing some oil starvation on startup. i will try 10w 40 Monday. I did add Zinc a few days ago now this is how it sounds now. Some of the motor knock is gone but the valves make noise until oil gets to the top Sorry for the back ground noise. my lawn mower was running. Land Rover Discovery

If you listen thru a stick is that noise coming from under the valve covers? It is pretty warm within 50 miles of Shem Creek, that stuff will be a lot thicker in the winter month. Good oil filter can help also, but at startup the bypass valve should be open letting full flow happen. If you want a stop gap measure before opening up valve covers so you can remove rockers and clean up passages, BG oil treatment is a good solvent treatment. Have to buy from a shop that carries it, not sold via big box stores.
