I'm going to look at a 1995 disco with 130K miles that has a bad trans. The owner said it will go in reverse but that's it and hes asking $700.
My questions are how hard is it to change out the trans?
Where can I get an old trans to install?
Should I have the old one rebuilt and what would that cost?
Would I be getting into something I shouldn't be getting into?

So will the shifter move into the other gears and the vehicle will not move, or will the shifter move into reverse and not physically move to the other gears? A tranny could be anywhere from a simple, tighten a linkage fix, to a complete teardown and rebuild or replacement. I don't know how much a used or rebuilt tranny would cost. Google it or someone else might know from experience. Call a few tranny shops and ask the local shops what they would charge to rebuild your tranny.

 

I've called the seller of the rover but just get voice mail. When I get him I'll get more details and get back to you for more feedback.
