Might not be that outlandish. Mercedes also used ZF transmissions, so who knows about bolt pattern? 93 300D would be a 124.128 chassis.. Good welder to fab brackets for engine mounts. Throw away alarm, ECU, etc. Install real gauges. Would have issues with speedometer as it is driven by ECU. Forget cruise control. Beef up front suspension. Electric radiator fan if fan clutch does not line up.

300D of that era would use a 722.418 transmission.

interesting idea...
im surprised that theres room lengthwise to fit the inline 6...

my daily driver is a 1995 e300, and while i do enjoy that in the merc for smooth cruising on the highway its definitely not a wildly powerful lump.
i cant imagine it trying to push a heavy LR down the road... or heaven forbid tow anything...

thanks I will do some homework ,I am not worried about on the highway that is not where these rigs are good . I have two discos with the stick so I will pick the one in the best shape. do you think the diesel would be heavier ,I never thought of that thanks again

Default still doing the conversion?

If you are still doing the conversion, I would be personally interested in knowing if any what progress, hiccups and successes you come across as I am doing the same conversion except with the 3.0 om617 I5. You will be best to mate the 240D flywheel or a manual flywheel from a 300GD or G-Wagon. Very difficult to find unless you have between 4-700.oo to shell out to the dealer. Ebay.de has a few for 140+ euros. You need the pressure plate as well. I am not sure what differences the 2.8 I6 vs. 3.0 I5 has between the two regardign the crank, bolt patterns and whether or not the 2.8 has a different diameter flywheel all together, only one determined to find out .... will.

I have a 3.9 and have all pieces of the puzzle to find out. The biggest issue was finding for the right price for my budget the manual flywheel native to the om617 craink with 12 bolts in the pattern. The 240D is 10 lbs less than the 300D Euro TD wagon fitted with a 5sp manual trans ans well as (for me) un touchable UNIMOG and the uppity G-Wagon which are incredibly difficult to find unless you have a dead relative with either of these rare in the US vehicles. As rare as a 300TDI Land Rover in the US.

With that said. Hit me up and I can give you some learned info about this project. The manual conversion is a hell of allot more straight forward than the auto. So Don't let this project get you overwhelmed like some folks on here.

I have an extra manual flywheel from a 240D which fits the om617 crank if you are interested and serious about this project.

Cheers!,
Jason
