If you just trying to keep the squirrels and stuff from building a nest I guess the gutter mesh is OK but really.........

The perforated or expanded is much stronger and gives a better end result.

Whatever you use, cut and sand it cleanly, clamp it down uniformly, and epoxy it carefully, evenly, and completely.

Doing this this weekend hopefully. Will a stock wrap around disco II brush guard make this any more difficult?

i cut my mud flap into small strips and then glued them along the edge of the opening. I then screwed my mesh solidly into the hard rubber. it gives it a little separation and security and I think finishes the job nicely. I don't think I'm pasting the badge back on. We don't need no stinkin badges.

the metal tube type? a little more awkward but you can get the grill out without removing the bars.

on those pvc wrap around brush guards, it's probably a different story.

Hey didnt I read something about you staying on one thread only? Welcome.

it was sooo hard to find the right mesh for me. i ended up using the hardware cloth and securing it really tight....i think. I flat black sprayed the h/w cloth and it looks great hanging on my garage wall.

anything suitable was $100 and shipped other than what the guys used and id have to order that online too. i looked at the perf and it would have all been too hoakey for this build. the way i connect it tho will make it a breeze to swap out for a new one when i come across it.

Hardware cloth is fine, sorta like the real early ones. is it in a little square pattern?

I see lots of new Dodges and others with some wild looking custom grills.

I did a little more on mine with the expanded metal. Cut tubing works well to edge it. And it forms easily.

I did not use the plastic frame except for the very top edge under the hood where the three screws are. Will replace it with metal before long. Hven't bothered to paint it yet, but blacked out would look good!

If you were really creative like those hopper builders you could custom cut a pattern from sheet and get really wild with the metal cutting. Or make louvers.

I have a famous artist friend with a computer based laser or something else serious aluminum cutting machine. He drives a fancy LR2. I was talking to him about fabbing up a couple grills. He was into it.

As I said my grill still hangs in the garage ready to go....the second pic is the original and the arrows show where I added the splashguard rubber material.

The wave in the cloth is not there in the finished pieces. this shot is before i put the rubber in and screwed it down. it's wired to 1/4 rebar that i shaped to the perimeter of the opening.

I better break out some new mods.
