Default Need boat towing advice 96 disco 1.

I just upgraded to 17’ arima sea ranger on ezloader trailer with no brakes from 15’ boat. This boat is much heavier and need advice on towing. I read big difference in towing capacity on brakes vs non braked trailers. Anyone have experience with towing boats this size on disco 1s? Should I get larger trailer with brakes?

boat + trailer = 3000lbs.

Thank you.

I towed a 26' Macgregor 26M sailboat with the exact same vehicle you have. It was very uncomfortable. The Disco has such a short wheelbase that I had to keep an iron death grip on the steering wheel to keep it from being whipped all over the road. My boat is significantly larger than yours with large, flat sides, so it caught the wind a lot, so that added to the stress.

That being said, I towed a 10 foot cargo trailer (basically a horse trailer without the windows) and didn't have any issues.

Keep in mind that the 7000+ tow rating for the Disco is for when it is in LOW gear. When you're in high, it's only rated for something like 2-3000 pounds, IIRC. Confirm by looking at the sticker in the driver's door.

I'd go with brakes.

Better safe than sorry. How far are you towing it? 5 miles, 50 miles?
