Default Need help to determine engine year

When I bought my Disco the guy told me the previous owner had put in a newer engine, but he never got any specifics and also didnt have contact info for the guy. I would like to know exactly what I have, but havent found anything in my searching. I have attached three pics that hopefully will help. The engine at one point had secondary air injection, but those are all closed up. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Yep, 97's did not have SAI. So it is from a D2. The engine will have a serial number, not sure if dealer can tell you the year from engine, they can from VIN, but that is on the donor chassis. Might even be a 4.6

Its a DII engine with a DI intake, you can tell by the oil filler, its on the wrong side for a DI.
They are the exact same engine so you still need to order parts for your model year.

The engine has a serial number. It's located on the block and is visible on the left side (driver's side). Look between the third and fifth cylinder ports on the head. There's a flat, two inch space with the serial number embossed. Typically, the first three digits will identify the year or at least the range of years that the nine was manufactured for.

How to Find Your Land Rover Engine Serial Number

50D is for DI's from '96-'99.
56D is for DII's from '99-'00.

I can't seem to find the codes for later engines but a quick call to the dealer should help you.
