Default Play in steering

Happy New Year! Ok guys I have some play in my steering wheel when driving. I have done some research and kinda pointing to new gearbox. I have replaced the gearbox already but ran into problems with the place that did it. They put p.s fluid in. Would that break down my gearbox? I don't want to just start replacing parts. Any suggestions?

No, it won't hurt the box, could hurt the pump though.
What have you done to check for play and be specific.

When I drive I can move the steering wheel about 2 1/2 inches before the tires move. I have checked the bushings and it looks like they could be replaced. I haven't had a chance to check tie rods or ball joints.

Or wheel bearings, swivels. Check them all and get back to us.

If everything checks out ok, the steering box is adjustable. On the top of it is a nut with a star or allen screw in the middle of it. A 19mm wrench, loosen the nut, tighten the star/hex screw, re-tighten big nut. That takes slop out of the steering box.
