Very impressive.

 

I am installing the downpipe gaskets on the exhaust of my ‘97 D1. I noticed that one side is smooth, and the other side is crimped all around the exterior and the inner holes. Upon installation, which way is up, or does it matter. Bearmach part FA8FB. See attached photo. Thanks.

Downpipe gaskets

 

Installed some nice quality bumpstops from Bearmach onto the XD (last thing before my trip to HCRR 2021). Of coarse the XD's rusty bolts put up a little fight but I got the plates off (rubber bumpstops were long gone lol), and just installed them all with new 5/16 grade 8 3/4inch bolts & lock nuts.

It does drive a lot nicer and tight in the rear with the new upper ball joint assembly. It used to feel floaty in the rear with the old completely worn out unit!

 

This was an easy removal. Jack up one wheel at a time, remove tire, remove spacer, clean surfaces, then re-install tire. Repeat. No heat or hammering was involved. Still true and round, and would like to sell them. 5 x 6.5” bolt pattern with lug nuts. Not sure if these can fit Defender or RR Classic. A torque wrench to 95 ft/pounds torque on a 1-1/16” extended socket does the job after a drive. Realizing that the standard nut wrench is sometimes awkward with the large nuts, I will keep a breaker bar in the truck for future. I did a quick clean with acetone.

That being said, I would like to sell these. Looking at $200 Canadian funds. Shipping across Canada is $50 (26 pounds!). No idea on US shippping.

 

Well my list got longer - after a week at SouthWest Rovers here is what was completed

Repair - Heads off to replace blown gasket number #1 cyl - decked / new valve steam seals - new lifters were already in from previous preventative maint. job

100K Preventative maint. - drop oil pan / clean / clean pickup tube / new pickup tube gasket / new pan gasket - replace oil pump - replace timing chain and sprockets / cam oil seal - replace water pump

 

This weekend I finally got out and did a little wheeling after buying my guy a month or two ago. We drove to the beach and ran through the sand. Did perfectly fine minus our night drive where the wind was whipping so fast in the same direction we where driving that the motor started to get a little hot. Had to keep turning into the wind and sitting for a few seconds to bring the temps down. Never got to close to over heating though so that was good. It was a blast. Drove highway there and back total trip was 560 miles, and flawless! Now I will be knocking on wood before something decides it needs to break! Next up is going to be wheeling out at the Uwharrie in North Carolina. I've fallen in love with this Discovery 1 and plan to keep it driving for a long time to come.

That's part of the fun of owning them though. Then again its no where near a daily driver for me so its semi stress free! hahaha

I just bought a 1998 Discovery 1998 2.5 TDI (300TDI)
My first first trips off road I set it on fire!!!
The "mechanic" to owned it before had revolutionized the battery mount and used the thinnest tiewraps to fix the battery, a sloping uphill track leaned the battery against the power steering liquid reservoir, creating a short that burned a hole and set a small fire!

I had it put out quick, but I might reverse the revolutionizing battery mounting designs!!

I don't know why people half *** fix their cars/trucks. Such a safety hazard.

I’ve seen it all….
- rolled up aluminum foil in fuse connections
- a string connects to the windshield wipers so they can pull the string to move the wipers from the drivers seat
- put electrical tape over fault lights in the dash/cluster.

jeez…
