Will do a seasonal oil change in a couple of months and thinking ahead started checking out some oil filters - LR filters have gotten so expensive, so I started watching oil filter reviews on youtube for options - after checking out pretty much anything that fits a D1 V8 - I decided to try a Purolator One PL14670 - IMO seems like a great filter for the $ (Amazon $8.68)
What did I do in my Disco today? Extinguished an electrical fire. After running an errand, when I went to drive home, I found I couldn't shift the car out of park. I spent some time diagnosing using the Electrical Service Manual and figured out the Brake Light Switch was malfunctioning so the shifter wasn't getting input that the brake was depressed. I unplugged then reattached the switch and it started transmitting 12V again, so I popped the car into drive and started on my way home.
Three blocks later I smelled plastic. One more block, I looked under the steering wheel and spotted a flame. I pulled over, grabbed my fire extinguisher, and thankfully the fire was small and easily extinguished with two small blasts. I'm not sure what happened that caused the switch to overheat and why neither of the fuses in this system tripped, but I'm thankful I have that little fire extinguisher in the back.
I can get a replacement switch pretty easily, it's part number LR005794, but I'm trying to figure out where I can get the accompanying female C227 connector to rewire my brake switch. I sent a note to Will Tillery, so hopefully he has something. If anyone else knows a good spot to get electrical connectors let me know. Until then, my beautiful disco is taking a break.
Replaced bearings in my alternator. It was making a very subtle noise. I would probably be the only person to notice. Larger rear bearing was fine. Smaller front bearing was a little tight. I guess it was worth doing as it is not very difficult.
Finally replaced the bulb in my clock, I can read the time without glasses.
Got 4 new tires, found out while troubleshooting the clock my batter would drop below 12 after just a few mins with the doors open, so new battery, 7 years was good enough.
Troubleshooting the rear defrost right now, 30 amp fuse looked good but was bad, replaced that, now I need to start digging in with the dvom.
My fuel tank cradle had been showing signs of rust since I bought the vehicle but I’d been putting this project off because it required building a jig to support the weight of the fuel tank while swapping cradles. And there were always other projects. I’m glad I finally got to this one. There was a lot of flaking rust hiding in the cavity between the tank and the cradle.
