Your truck is known as a ROW = Rest Of World which in 96 used CUX14 fuel injection and a distributor. There is a box under the right hand seat that should show codes in two digit red LED with key on, engine not running. More times than not the problem with hard restarts after engine is warm is the coolant temp sensor not giving correct temp. It overfuels the engine flooding it. Should be mounted to the top radiator hose neck on thermostat housing. Check it's connection.
