No, a steering damper has nothing whatsoever to do with controlling the tightness of your steering.
It's only to absorb shocks when one wheel hits something, like a kerb around town, or a large rock off-road.

Tom just directed me to fixing my death wobble.
It was poorly assembles bearings.
I suspected the damper too and replaced it first... DUHHH.
The gas charged type pushes and the car ever so slightly wants to go to the right ditch. Get the regular one after you fixed the wobble.
- Check the tie-end joints by compressing them with a large channel lock I mean LARGE. If there is up-down movement, bingo! You can ring AB and tell them LRF told you to call them... I now get a 10% discount.
- Next, the steering box could be loose. I have't got that one yet so ask Tom.
The death wobble is extremely dangerous, I nearly rolled the car.
Fix it this weekend.

I see from the picture that you have Geolandars too. I chucked mine, they hydroplaned too easily on the hyghway. Oh, they were real dogs on the snow: traction: some, braking: nope, nada, niet! The car would corner on a straight line.
Now that I think of it, My bearings, steering and front end problems started when I put the Geolandar tires on. Hummm....
