Default tdi import in California

Hello, I am new to this forum but have read it for awhile. I want a disco1 to love. I love diesel and would love a diesel one, but I am in California. 97 and older don’t need to pass smog once licensed here, but curious if anyone here has dig into importing one and getting it licensed? If not, or not possible I will be digging into making the old Buick as reliable as possible. whatever i get will be garaged and loved. thank you for any input you may have

It will be extraordinarily difficult, but not unheard of.

A) You pay big bucks to a CARB certified facility and retrofit the vehicle for compliance in CA ($10,000 or more usually)

B) You try your luck at various DMVs. Most of the time, they will insist on sending your paperwork up to Sacramento where the truck will inevitably get marked and never registered. In order to even attempt registering, you will need a title from another state + the usual import documentation - you will never register an import diesel in CA without a title from another state. If you want to register an engine swapped NAS D1, I believe it's even harder to do and likely will force you down the (A) path.

Good luck!

Your main problem is the state of California.

If it were me, I'd either Ls swap a D2 or buy a D1.
the gems 4.0 is pretty darned reliable in a d1

I am interested to hear how to keep the D1 very reliable, I love D1’s! I would meticulously maintain to keep it as stock as possible
