Default Transmission Questions

So with over 200k on the clock and a freshly rebuild engien it's time to address the Transmission. Not knowing the history I did a fluid and filter change and the fluid was dark. I do have a clunk when I go from r to d or p to r.

I'm thinking of buying a Transmission from the junk yard and rebuild it. Is that something I could do or should a shop handle this. I'm no pro but I have rebuilt a few engines.

If so what are/if any upgrades should I look into?

From what I have read the clunk comes from the splines on the output shaft on Transmission Does that sound right?

The rebuild seems like something I may like doing.

Before you start tearing into a trans check the condition of the drive shaft U joints and rotoflex (if still there) first.
You would be surprised how even a slightly bad joint will transfer a clunk sound, especially with a truck of this mileage.
Minimally, get out the grease gun and give the U joints a blast. Good Luck!

Rotoflex has been removed, and clunk is there with both shafts removed. I removed the rotoflex a few months back.

Just trying to find a rebuild kit. Lots out there but all seem to be a little different.

May want to look at this too. It’s something I’m trying to get around to....
