sounds similar to my issue read:
https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...-issues-60906/

I second(third?) the advice about the missing steel reinforcement from one of the lifters.

https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...s-60906/page5/
Page 5 has some pictures, the "nipple-rod" and the failed seat in the rocker. I had to replace 2 pushrods and 2 rockers both on the drivers side.

Your engine looks amazingly clean, perehaps someone has been in there before? (you can compare to my pictures too ... inside mine was black

Edit:
Oh and yes, replace the gaskets! they are cheap and the engine will leak enough oil without your help ....

There is also an anaerobic rtv that is used to seal the upper plenum so you can actually separate it again at a later date...

I went ahead and took everything out and removed both sides. The

Holy crap, them things are dirty.

Cleaning the plenum/intake, the idle air port was covered in sludge and the iacv was dirty so gave it a good cleaning. The port from plenum to passenger rocker was completely clogged.

nuclearw - I'll read your post in a bit more detail tonight. I'm second owner since 30k and as far as I remember, I don't recall anyone being under the cover but was in in the shop multiple times while under warranty and few times after so who knows. I did notice the picture of the pushrod indicating a nipple but all the push rods on my vehicle does not have nipples, see attached picture. Second picture of rocker soaking for an hour.

Both valve trains are soaking right now so I'll post some pictures tomorrow after it it cleaned but I did get a couple pictures.

A couple questions I have:
1. The oil port in the rear of both valve trains were closed to being completely clogged if not 100%. I took a small screw driver and cleaned it as far in as I could, it was filled with sludge. I took blow gun to it and air can be hear passing through now. But it still feels like it's not completely clean compare to the front port, which easily blows air through.
2. Is there anything that I can use, i.e. chemicals to clean that port? I suspect not without ruining the oil and if not the engine.

I also have the gaskets on the way.

good deal, sounds like yours may have just been oil starvation then, keep cleaning then inspect the rockers and see if any seem off, one of mine was destroyed as in the pic, the other was not anywhere near as bad but you could still see a ridge on the pushrod.

Update:

Cleaned up the rocker assembly and all the parts look to be in good shape. Springs are still very strong taking a bit of force to push in. However, when I checked the pushrods, none were visibly bent but I rolled each one on my cast iron table saw with a very flat surface and discovered 2 bent, one very obvious on rolling and the other barely both on the driver side and where I hear the noise from. The rest rolled along fine and no bent rods on the passenger side.

Question: Can I replace just those 2 or should I replace all 16? I looked online and it appears that the replacements are those rods with the ball at the end and not like the originals. The only place that I can see with rods that look like originals is British Atlantic.

You can replace just the 2... if you have money for it go ahead and replace all of them. The new style you describe is what I used, so far they have mixed well with the rest. I did replace the rockers they went along with as well, so not sure if that made a difference.

While waiting for parts, posting this question to see if someone who's done this before may help.

The oil port feeding the rocker shaft was clogged and I went ahead and cleaned with a screw driver as far down until I hit bottom. Is there anyway to clean this further to ensure it is clogged free beyond the where I hit the bottom? I'm concerned that the sludges I remove was just on the top but it may be more clogged further down the port. I blew my pressurized air but it's not doing much.

Thanks

soak in Purple Power overnight (available at walmart ~15$ for 2.5gal)

then clean up with some brake cleaner.

pour some oil inside, and/or drizzle along the shaft to keep it from causing damage while waiting for the oil pump at first startup

The purple power stuff is awesome... (look at the before/after pics from my thread)

Apologize if I wasn't clear...the oil port I was referring to is the one on the engine, not the shaft. There are two, one at end where the shaft is attached to the engine. I assume that one or both of those would push/feed oil into the shaft to lubricate the rockers. The one towards the rear is the the one that was clogged.
